Rocamadour
Rocamadour is a commune located in the department of Lot. Its name comes from the relic of Amadour, whose body was discovered intact in the sanctuary in 1166. Rocamadour is an old place of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary. The statue is in a church of the perched sanctuary.
With an European importance in the XIIth century, Rocamadour lost its notoriety after the passage of the Protestants in 1562. It was again plundered under the revolution, the sanctuaries were restored in the XIXth century, avoiding an almost complete destruction. The final test of this pilgrimage consisted in climbing the cross way, which carries to the religious city which includes 7 churches (12 others disappeared). |
